Watching Movies: Computer or TV?

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

couch-potatoThere are great reasons to watch movies on your television, and you probably already know all about these. There are also some truly excellent reasons to watch movies on your computer that you may not have thought about. I’ll review both just so no one can accuse me of being biased.

Watch Movies on your TV

Bigger screen

You paid for the big screen, you might as well enjoy it.

Surround sound

My husband and I love watching movies and have invested in surround sound. It is a fantastic way to amp up your movie watching experience.

Traditional

It’s the way most people are used to watching movies. Oldie but a goodie and all that.

Watch Movies on your Computer

Instant access

You can download the movie whenever you want it and don’t have to wait for it to be mailed to you and you don’t have to run into town to grab it.

Portability

You can watch a movie while waiting at a doctor’s appointment, for a flight, or for your kids to finish baseball practice.

Diversity

You can watch what you want to on your computer not what the rest of the family wants to.

Of course there are some downsides to watching movies on your computer if you are downloading them (instead of inserting a dvd). For example the download process will eat up temporary memory. Once you finish the movie your hard drive will probably be a bit more fragmented than before you began. Fortunately, this is one of those problems that is easy to remedy. Just be sure to defrag after each movie and you will be good to go.

Do you watch movies on your computer? What made you make the switch from TV to computer?

Watching Movies on Your Computer

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

movie-projectorThere are two basic ways to watch movies on your computer. You can download the movie or you can insert a dvd. There are good reasons to use either option.

Download

Inexpensive

It is much more inexpensive to download a movie. This can be done for a few dollars if you do it by the movie or may come free with certain movie rental subscriptions.

Easy

You don’t have to leave your house to get the movie you want to see.

Quick

You don’t have to wait for a movie to be available at your local store or for it to arrive by mail.

DVD

Permanence

Buying a dvd is a good idea if you know, or are fairly sure, you are going to want to see the movie repeatedly. When my husband and I really like a movie we always end up buying it.

Memory

When you use a dvd the memory in your computer isn’t affected.

Bonus Features

Sometimes a downloaded movie will have bonus features, but not always. If these are important to you, you should probably get the dvd.

Personally, I’m a big fan of downloading movies. I have a movie subscription that makes it really cheap to try out new movies. I don’t like having to leave my house in the middle of the night when I’m awake for no good reason and wanting to watch something new. I also am more likely to try a movie if I see it while I’m surfing for something to download than if I have to remember to buy or rent it later. Additionally, there are tons more movies available for download than I could buy locally. Variety rocks!

The downside, however, is that all of  the downloading does affect the computer’s memory. It causes it to become fragmented. This is an easily solved problem, fortunately. All I do is defrag my computer regularly to make sure I don’t have any problems watching or downloading future movies.

Defrag for Faster Movie Downloads

May 29th, 2009 1 Comments

hollywoodI love watching movies. I like all genres except horror. I know, I know….I’m a big baby. But they always give me nightmares and I see no reason to subject myself to a sleepless night for a movie I’m not even going to like. Back to the movies I do like. I like comedies, romances, sci-fi (a lot), and action movies where things get blown up (like these the most actually). For the longest time my husband and I just bought whatever movies we wanted to watch because we realized it was cheaper than all the late fees we were racking up at the movie rental place in town.

With the advent of the Internet (yay progress!) came the glorious advancement of movie watching technology….downloading movies. Now we watch even more movies than before (because it is way cheaper). I’d say we watch three to five movies each week. Some are old movies we own but most are movies we download.

The only problem with downloading movies is that depending on what you are downloading, and from where, it can take a little time. By a little I mean slightly more than loading your dvd player. Movie junkies that we are, however, we don’t like to wait. We’ve found that by regularly defragging our computer the downloads move along more smoothly. Apparently having to find temporary space amidst all of that fragmentation takes longer so we just spend the time each week to defrag the system. Poof, downloads at the speed of…light?

Have you begun watching more movies now that you can download them instead of having to go out to buy or rent them? If you haven’t tried downloading movies yet, what is holding you back? Give it a try, I promise you won’t be disappointed in the expansion of your cinematic horizons.

Fragmented Hard Drive and Downloading Movies

May 29th, 2009 2 Comments

computer-catMy husband and I have a serious difference in movie preferences. Sure we can agree on some movies like sci-fi and action flicks, but that is where the similarities end. He is a deep thinker and enjoys dramas. He is also a big brave man and loves a good horror movie. I, on the other hand, am a fraidy cat and refuse to watch horror movies and would much rather watch a romance (I’m sure you can guess his reaction to that). This means that we don’t always want to watch the same movie. When this happens we leave the living room television alone and each grab our laptop. (Yes, we each have a laptop because we are that geeky).

This is where being a geek comes in truly handy. We can each download whatever movie we want to see, plug in our headsets and zone out. Pretty relaxing, right? No fights about who gets to watch what movie, no stress about getting your way and knowing your sweetie is unhappy. The only thing that could ruin this bliss is a fragmented hard drive.

Heh. You wouldn’t have been expecting that if it weren’t for the post title, huh? Oh well. I guess I wouldn’t make it as a writer for a suspense movie. Anyway a fragmented hard drive can do several things to interrupt your movie nirvana. First, it can slow down the download. If you are a patient person you might not even notice the delay. I, however, am what pretty much everyone considers extremely impatient. I want it my way, now. Not thirty seconds from now, but right now.

The way I make sure I get what I want when I want it is to regularly defrag my hard drive. How often I do it depends on how often I’m downloading movies and what else I’ve been using my computer. If I’m only watching movies I’d probably defrag every third or fourth movie just to keep up the download speed. Yeah…I’m that impatient.

Has downloading movies helped make your relationship happier? Does a slow download time make you catty??

Top 5 Reasons to Download movies

May 29th, 2009 1 Comments

fiveMy husband and I are huge movie fanatics. We’ve always enjoyed going to the theater to watch the newest movie and even staying home cuddling on the couch with the latest release. We both agree that being able to download movies is the best thing to happen to the movie industry since buttered popcorn.

Without further ado, the top five reasons to download movies:

1. Selection

Online movie ‘rental’ places have a much larger selection than anything you are going to find in a brick and mortar store. By rentals, in the online environment, I mean downloadable options

2. Time

You have instant access to the movie you want to watch. No standing in line at the rental place or in a store or in a theater line.

3. Cost

Downloading movies is economical. Most online movie rental businesses have download options available that are included in your monthly premium. The plan I have gives me unlimited downloads. Oh, yeah.

4. Quiet

Unlike the theater you don’t have phones ringing or kids screaming or teens making out. Unlike a movie rental business you would go in to, you don’t have…well all of the same things and you don’t have to fight over the last copy of the latest blockbuster.

5. Convenience

Anywhere you have access to the Internet or Wi-Fi you can download a movie. With all of the free Wi-Fi areas available now this means you could be watching a movie with your morning latte, on the train to work, or in an airport waiting for a plain.

Really, the only downside to downloading movies is that it can cause your computer memory to become fragmented. However, this isn’t even a big deal because computers naturally become fragmented and there is an easy solution. Defrag your computer after every few downloads if you notice it is affecting any of your applications or your download time. Poof, instant fix.
